5 Green Architecture Trends in 2022
September 21, 2022
Green architecture has been a rising trend in 2022. Even before this year, green architecture gained the interest of designers and architects as environmental consciousness gained precedence over other styles of architecture.
In this article, we outline five green architecture trends that rises in precedence in 2022.
But, before we talk about the green architecture trends, let’s talk about what is a green architecture principle first.
Green Architecture Principle
The green architecture principle is an architecture principle striving to reduce environmental damage while still providing quality products. This comes in form of using sustainable materials, green energy, and other sustainable design principles.
1. Sustainable materials
Sustainable materials are good alternatives to replace the current building material, such as brick and steel. Using sustainable materials is environmental-friendly, as these materials can be produced and reproduced multiple times.
There are organic sustainable materials, such as bamboo, straw, mycelium, and cork, and inorganic materials such as recycled plastic, ashcrete (fly ash mixed with concrete), recycled rubber, and ferrock (the combination of steel dust and silica).
2. Modular construction
Modular construction addresses the issue of effectiveness, fuel consumption, and carbon emission in modern construction.
Using modular construction, segments of a building are prefabricated, meaning that they are constructed in different factories and then assembled at the main construction site. Material waste is also reduced due to the leftover materials can be used in other projects in the factory.
There is less need for transportation in modular construction, which means that it reduces carbon emitted into the atmosphere.
3. Green Architecture with Biophilic Design
Biophilic design stays to be one of the green architecture trends in 2022. This trend is understandably enduring, as the biophilic design is beneficial in its application.
In biophilic design, human-nature interaction is maximized. Through interaction with nature, the human body experiences positive effects, such as increased focus, maintained stamina and stabilized heart rate.
4. Reuse and recycle
The demand for recycling increases in the following years. Not only are sustainable, but reused and recycled materials also have their own, distinctive, feelings to them. Materials such as reclaimed wood, ecobrick (recycled plastic), and plywood made of sawdust are good for the environment.
Using reused and recycled materials also mean less new production, which in turn leads to less carbon waste.
5. Renewable energy
Countries have been striving towards net zero for several past years. These efforts are done by utilizing fuel cells, solar energy, wind energy, and other sources of renewable energy.
